Hitchin: Town launches its own currency as Christmas approaches

More than 80 independent businesses across Hitchin now accept a new form of currency, dubbed “H-Town Pounds”.

The new vouchers – launched by Hitchin BID in partnership with Hitchin Property Trust (HTP) – aim to help boost local business.

Vouchers can be used as gifts for friends and family, or as an opportunity for residents to show their support for Hitchin’s independent businesses and services.

Downtown Manager Tom Hardy explained, “With H-Town Pounds, you can give your friends and family everything that Hitchin’s independents have to offer.

“From a special meal to a thoughtful gift or a beauty treatment, the independents at Hitchin provide a great shopping experience.”

He added, “It has been a difficult time for our independent businesses in downtown Hitchin.

“H-Town books are a fantastic way for shoppers to show their support and help drive much-needed business this holiday season and beyond.”

Celebrating the new initiative, Liz Tye of Next Page Books said H-Town Pounds is “ideal for independent stores”.

“At Christmas you don’t always know what to buy, so vouchers make the perfect gift and we invite everyone to spend theirs here at Next Page Books. “

To kick off the program, in addition to sponsoring the initiative, HPT is offering £ 50 vouchers to each of its residential tenants.

Alex Roberton, Managing Director of HPT, said: “HPT recognizes that it has been a difficult year for our commercial and residential tenants here in Hitchin.

“H-Town Pounds is a huge boost for Hitchin’s independents and we are only too happy to support the program.”

At Hermitage Road, Angell’s HealthCare was one of the first companies to sign up. Director Brian Failes said, “Any initiative like this is good for local businesses. Why don’t you sign up? “

Simon Kirbyshire of Waitrose said: “We are very fortunate in Hitchin to have such a vibrant indie scene and these coupons will help promote that.

“It’s a lovely gift for local friends and family, especially as Christmas approaches. Who knows, they might even become Hitchin’s favorite motto!”

Available in denominations of £ 5, £ 10 and £ 20, vouchers can be purchased from Hitchin Waitrose, the Hitchin Information Desk and in line.
